and to think it was known asbestos was hazardous as far back as the early 1900s. but- like tetraethyl lead in gasoline- they kept using it.
almost all of the steam pipes in the buildings at work have asbestos insulation. they have to have a re-coating of sealer put on them every so often and warning labels every 10 feet or so. When they do have to work on the pipes/valves, it’s a big production for an abatement team to come in and remove the section of insulation. then it’s replaced with rock wool insulation instead.
I fear we’re going to find out that rock wool is no good either...

Remember when the Mexican secretary of health bough tons of radioactive milk and then tried to hide it?

There are a couple buildings at work where we wear respirators anytime we have to work in them. They have asbestos wrapped steam pipes that are in poor shape.
They already have a contract to have it all replaced, but working on a military base means we can only use one of the approved companies to do the work. Unfortunately that means we’re still waiting for them to finalize a date they can start.

Have a read up on the Armley Asbestos case if you want to get extra angry. The company covered it up for decades, then Federal-Mogul stepped in to put the extra icing on the Fuck You cake.

40,000 tons, which might be linked to a 300% increase in cancer cases in children between 1987-1997.
The powdered milk was sold at something called conasupo; a government ran chain of grocery stores that sold mostly to poorer people.
I say “might” because an investigation was never carried out.

The best way to kill the insulation itch is to alternate really hot and really cold water in the shower. I installed insulation one weekend in Texas in the summer. The pay was great and it sounded like a good way to make money over the summer during high school.
Attic temperatures routinely get 2 0-40F higher than outside temperatures, and my first day the outside temps hit 108F. You’d work in the attic for 10-20min then swap out to rehydrate and cool off while the other guy went up. While you were recovering you were the spotter, if the other guy quit making noise or didn’t come back by the 20min mark you had to make sure he hadn’t passed out from heatstroke.
We wore long sleeves and pants to mitigate the insulation glass fibers, which didn’t help with the heat. I got paid $20 an hour as a high school student in the early 2000's, but even that wasn’t worth it.

See, this is what we should be able to agree on. Government may not be good at running business (they aren’t), and that's why capitalism works much better than socialism. But, what government is good for is regulation and watchdogging. We need that protection because business has shown time and again that it has no ability to police itself. With exceptions, corporations have no morals, even if the people in them do individually.

When I first had kids, my friends’ parents and grandparents gave me shit for not using certain products on my kids, and instead using natural alternatives. I’m also conscientious about what I feed them and what chemicals Inuse around my house . They always had the same argument: we used this stuff and we turned out fine. What they fail to recognize is how riddled with cancer their whole generation is. Willful ignorance on apart of both the corporations and public that came before us.

On an unrelated note, I actually do know of someone near me who has acquired a decent stockpile of NOS asbestos pipe wrap in the original boxes. If anyone’s interested, I think he’s willing to sell.

Excellent point. My wife is a lot more careful about using the most chemical free and “natural” options for our infant – e.g. diapers, soaps, creams, etc. I sometimes get the “we turned out fine, why do we need this?!” urge but remember what you just said. She’s a bioengineer by trade and a scientist through and through – so she’s not some granola all the way, chemicals will kill you kind of person. But if you can achieve the same end goal with as few ingredients as possible in something, and you can afford it, then it’s not unreasonable to air on the side of caution.

Glass wool (aka fiberglass insulation) is different from rock wool , though they have similar applications:

How on Earth did they make radioactive milk? Allow the cows to trade in Cherynobl?

A lot of food in Europe was damaged by Chernobyl actually... It is exactly how it got damaged.

I don’t doubt that increased exposure to dubious chemicals is having some effect, but it’s also worth remembering that we are seeing more cancers now because we are looking for them more now, allowing us to detect them sooner, which is generally good, but it does mean that many cancers we detect might not be fatal if left alone. Together with that there is the fact that people are living longer (despite the recent dip associated with the opioid crisis), which means that people who would have previously died of heart disease or whatever may now be living long enough to be killed by cancer instead.

For some reason I always thought you lived in Mexico. I guess I’m getting my Oppo members mixed up.
The Cherynobl thing would definitely explain it.
